Wildcats' passing game is deep and dangerous

Talk about sharing the wealth: Arundel senior quarterback Billy Cosh has done just that with an arsenal of receivers that has the Class 4A state runner-up Wildcats off to a 3-1 start.

In Alec Lemon, Ronnie Harris, Sean Fitzgerald and Scott Green, the team has four players with 12 or more catches, with Cosh completing 73 of 116 attempts for 1,021 yards and 14 touchdowns.

"It's a huge luxury in that we don't have to throw to any one person," Arundel coach Chuck Markiewicz said. "We have four players across the board, and that enables us to exploit mismatches. They try to take this player out, then we can go to someone else."

Syracuse-bound Lemon leads the way with 25 catches for 346 yards and six touchdowns, while the other three have shown a knack for stepping up when called upon. In the Wildcats' 34-7 win over South River last week, Harris (19 catches, 266 yards, four touchdowns) had six receptions and two scores, with Fitzgerald (12 catches, 176 yards, three touchdowns) also catching three passes for 81 yards and two scores. Teams also can't overlook Green, who has 12 catches for 141 yards and a touchdown.

Each player has a role, Markiewicz said. Lemon is the go-to receiver with great hands and speed, along with a physical presence blocking downfield. Fitzgerald reads defensive coverage well to find the soft spot and pick up first downs. And Harris is starting to come into his own.

Markiewicz was quick to credit the fine work put in by wide receivers coach Kevin Necessary. The Wildcats will visit upstart Meade (2-2) at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow in a game that should have plenty of big plays, and the Wildcats' wide receivers figure to be in on many of them.

Sullivan wins in Oregon

All-Metro cross country runner Zach Sullivan of Archbishop Spalding continued his strong senior season by winning the Nike Pre-Nationals' 5K Division I race Saturday in Portland, Ore. Sullivan finished in 15 minutes, 43 seconds to win by 2.65 seconds in a field of 154 runners. Teammate Ryan Topita took fifth (16:06.55) and the Cavaliers finished 10th in the 22-team field.

The weekend before, Sullivan set a meet record in capturing North County's Knight Invitational, covering the three-mile course in 15:02.65.
