COACH: 1. to train intensively (as by instruction and demonstration); 2. one who instructs or trains (an acting coach); especially one who instructs players in the fundamentals of a competitive sport and directs team strategy (a football coach).

To Arundel High senior defensive lineman Jasper Hunter, 17, Coach Chuck Markiewicz is more than just a definition. He's a man who inspires him to work hard every day. He's a man who expects self-sacrifice for the greater goal of the team.

"My ninth-grade year, I figured out that all he wants is people to come out and show good work ethic, so that's what I did," Hunter said. But "Coach Mark's" influence reaches beyond the playing field. "He tells us all the time about having a great character, not just on the football field, but showing good character off the field as well," Hunter said. So when Hunter was struggling last season, it was Coach Mark he turned to for support. "I had some challenges my 11th-grade year," Hunter said. "Coach Mark helped me stick with it and grow as a person." A testament to his nine years as the head coach at Arundel, hundreds of former players could say the same thing. "Coach Mark? He's great guy. He's definitely a father figure for everyone on our team," Hunter said. "We're all pretty much like brothers, and he's like our dad."
