With five touchdown passes against North County in a 49-15
victory against North County Friday - the fifth straight game
with that many - the Arundel High quarterback moved well ahead
of Elko's previous record (43) with 48 touchdown passes.
Elko set the mark last season, during a dream season for
Arundel, which finished 13-1 with a 36-30 loss to Quince
Orchard in the Class 4A state final. Elko broke Friendly
quarterback Joe Haden's record - set in 2006 - in a one-point
win over Suitland before tossing three more touchdowns against
the Raiders.
Cosh had 43 touchdowns by the end of the regular season
following five first-half strikes against Southern. Now he'll
try to bolster that number against Severna Park on Friday in
the Class 4A East Region final.
"That's not what we think about. It's just a nice thing
that he did," Arundel coach Chuck Markiewicz said Friday. "We
didn't think about that until last week when we knew he had a
chance to do it. … He did a real nice job, and I'm really
proud of him."
Cosh, a junior, didn't play much last year, and his 402
passing yards against the Knights give him 3,190 for the
season - 99 more than Elko's record mark last year.
Cosh is 25 passes and 80 attempts away from two more of
Elko's records, and should Arundel get past Severna Park,
he'll have a chance to take his predecessor completely out of
the record book.
"He knows where everyone is," Arundel receiver Alec Lemon
said. "He can make a great ball with a wet ball and just get
it to us. We make plays after that and make him look
good."
Cosh has thrown touchdowns to five receivers. Lemon leads
the Wildcats with 21 - two off former teammate Brandon
Johnson-Farrell's record - and he's followed by R.J. Harris
(16), Sean Fitzgerald (five), Scott Green (four) and Derrick
Rhodes (two).
Green caught Cosh's record-breaker in the first quarter
Friday, a 5-yard strike. Cosh threw scores of 42, 42, 41 and
22 yards to close out a decisive victory to end North County's
season and move Arundel forward.
"We kind of depicted what they were doing on defense," Cosh
said. "The beginning of the game was a little rough for us,
but we came out firing after that."
