Arundel football coach Chuck Markiewicz tied late Annapolis
coach Al Laramore for most lifetime coaching victories in Anne
Arundel County last night, as Arundel defeated Annapolis 20-19
in Gambrills.
The Wildcats sealed the victory when the defense stuffed an
Annapolis 2-point conversion attempt in the game's final
minutes.
"It was a great defensive effort," Markiewicz said. "We
hadn't stopped them all night long, and we stopped (them) on
the one-foot line. I'd say that's a big deal."
Markiewicz, now with 156 career wins, will go for the
record next week when the Wildcats host Severna Park.
"If you do this long enough with good people, these are the
kinds of things that happen," said Markiewicz, who was the
head coach at North County prior to coming to Arundel. "We
have good players, good coaches. I've been blessed and it's
just a function of doing the right thing, I guess ... They say
the harder you work, the luckier you get."
Junior quarterback Billy Cosh threw for two touchdowns,
both to R.J. Harris, to lead the Arundel offense.
Annapolis' Lamont Smith ran for one touchdown and caught
two scores from Craig Wilson.
The field at Annapolis High School is named for Laramore,
who passed away in 1989.
"He wasn't only a great coach, he was a great man,"
Markiewicz said. "When I was coming up as a player, I looked
up to him. He was an icon and has been in Anne Arundel County
for a long time. I'm sure one of the reasons they played us so
tough was that they didn't want that to happen against
them."
